The Woodlands' Holiday Season Runs on the Trolley's Clock

On Saturday, Nov. 7, The Woodlands Township shows off six new Town Center Trolleys at the boarding point along the south edge of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Two weeks later, on Nov. 21, Lighting of the Doves marks the start of the holiday season. Most of the season's big moments happen along the trolley loop, which makes it the easiest way to string together the lights, the fireworks and the ice rink without moving the car between stops.

The trolley runs on its own weekly clock. That clock fits some holiday nights perfectly. It ends before the lights matter on others, and it doesn't run at all on three of the season's biggest days. Match the two schedules up before the season starts.

What Rolls Out on Nov. 7

The Grand Trolley Reveal runs from 10 to 11 a.m. The six new trolleys have refreshed graphics and names drawn from the Township's Trolley Naming Contest, which produced 20 winning submissions. The Township is also recognizing 12 winners of a children's Trolley Coloring Contest across four age groups. Residents can climb aboard and take photos.

Community Impact reported that the project began in 2024, when the Township set aside $2.2 million for the six vehicles. The service itself has run for almost 20 years and costs nothing to ride.

According to the Township's route page, the trolley stops at Hughes Landing, Riva Row Boat House, Town Green Park, the Pavilion, Waterway Square, The Woodlands Waterway Marriott, The Woodlands Mall, Market Street, HEB, Cinemark 17 and The Woodlands Tower. Every major holiday setting in Town Center sits on or beside one of those stops. Visit The Woodlands says several trolleys run at once to keep waits around 10 minutes. The real-time tracking map shows where each one is on the route.

The Two Schedules, Side by Side

Here are the published trolley hours next to the evening events running in Town Center this season.

Day Trolley hours Evening event times this season How they line up
Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Market Street in Lights shows hourly, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Trolley ends before the 9:30 p.m. show
Friday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Waterway Winter Nights, 7 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 4, 11 and 18 Fully covered, fireworks included

Sunday Noon to 7 p.m. Market Street in Lights shows hourly, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Only the 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. shows
Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day No service Holiday on The Waterway lights stay up through Jan. 3 Drive or walk

Friday and Saturday are the nights the two schedules fully match. The rest of the season comes with conditions.

Saturday, Nov. 21 Fits Inside the Trolley Day

Lighting of the Doves takes over Town Green Park at 2099 Lake Robbins Drive from 3 to 8 p.m. It's free, and Town Green Park is a trolley stop. The Celebration Stage builds toward 7 p.m., when holiday greetings, Santa's arrival, the dove lighting and fireworks happen together. The Festival Stage schedules ice carvers at 6:20 p.m. The listing still shows several performer slots as TBD and notes that times and entertainment may change.

Because the trolley runs until 10 p.m. on Saturdays, the evening doesn't have to end when the doves light up. The same night opens Holiday on The Waterway, with light tunnels along the north side of The Waterway that stay up through Jan. 3, 2027. One stop farther is The Woodlands Mall, where a 40-foot tree in The Courtyard runs a light-and-music show every 30 minutes from sunset until the mall closes, mid-November through Dec. 31.

The ice rink opens the night before. The Woodlands Ice Rink at 2005 Lake Robbins Drive runs from Nov. 20, 2026 to Jan. 18, 2027. Visit The Woodlands lists two-hour sessions at $15.

December's First Three Fridays Are the New Anchor

The season's one new event lands on the trolley's longest night of the week. Visit The Woodlands lists Waterway Winter Nights as "New this year" and calls it a sister event to Lighting of the Doves. It runs at Waterway Square, 31 Waterway Square Place, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 4, 11 and 18. Admission is free, and there's live music. Each night ends with a seven-minute fireworks display over The Waterway at 8:55 p.m., weather permitting.

The fireworks wrap up a few minutes after 9 p.m., and Friday service runs until 10. That gives you close to an hour to get back to wherever you parked, even with Waterway Square crowds heading out at the same time.

Dinner can happen on the same block. Community Impact reported fall opening dates for two restaurants steps from Waterway Square: Bari Ristorante at 24 Waterway Ave. and Bar Bludorn at 25 Waterway Ave. Holiday shopping fits the same loop. Williams Sonoma opened at Hughes Landing, 1925 Hughes Landing Blvd., on Sept. 18, according to the same Community Impact roundup. Hughes Landing is the first stop on the route.

The morning after the first Winter Nights, Saturday, Dec. 5, the Township's Parks and Recreation Department holds the Glow and Go 5K. It's a chip-timed, USATF-sanctioned race set among the Holiday on The Waterway displays.

Sunday Is Where the Two Clocks Split

Sunday service ends at 7 p.m. Market Street in Lights runs a three-minute light show synchronized to holiday music every hour from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., every night from mid-November through Dec. 31. On a Sunday, the trolley reaches only two of those five shows, at 5:30 and 6:30. For anything later, you need to park near Market Street.

Weeknights come closer. Monday through Thursday service ends at 9 p.m., so you can catch the 8:30 show and miss only the last one. Market Street's tree lighting ceremony in Central Park opens the season in mid-November. Check Market Street's 2026 date before you pick an evening.

Three Days With No Trolley at All

The Township runs no trolley service on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Year's Day. On the 2026 calendar, that means Thursday, Nov. 26; Friday, Dec. 25; and Friday, Jan. 1. Two of those three dates are Fridays, normally the trolley's longest night of the week.

Holiday on The Waterway lights stay up through all three days. If you're walking the tunnels with family who are in town for the holidays, plan to drive, park and walk on those three days.

Where to Leave the Car

Parking near the loop comes in three kinds, and the event you're attending decides which one to use.

  1. Free color-coded lots. For Lighting of the Doves, Visit The Woodlands points to the free Orange, Yellow, Blue and White lots at 2002 Timberloch Place. It also lists the Gold Lot and the surface lot at the southeast corner of Lake Robbins Drive and Six Pines Drive. ADA parking is in the Green Lot off Riva Row and Timberloch Place. The parking guide describes the color lots as free and says accessible Gold Lot parking is free on a first-come, first-served basis.
  2. Town Center Parking Garage, 2005 Lake Robbins Drive. It charges for Pavilion and Town Green Park events and doubles as complimentary self-parking for Waterway Marriott guests.
  3. 24 Waterway Garage. Also listed as the Waterway Square Parking Garage, it's paid, with fees that vary by length of stay and start around $6. It carries the name of Waterway Square, where Winter Nights takes place.

On Fridays and Saturdays, one free lot plus the loop covers everything from Hughes Landing to the Mall tree. On Sundays after 7 and on the three holidays, the trolley isn't an option, so park as close as you can to the event you care about most.
